« Perfect for a 4th grade science fair project! »
Easy to follow directions. Although, I do not know if I would use the distilled water on the swabs as recommended. When we turned the plates upside down as directed, the plates that we used wet swabs on developed a hanging "drop" of water and the bacteria developed in a broad colony where the drop was. The ones that we did not use the water on looked as they should with small colonies forming where the swab had come into contact with the agar.

« Fantastic and Fun Stuff! »
I ordered this kit as a fun project to do with my kids, but I ended up having more fun with it than they did! It is very easy to use, and the seller sent detailed instructions on how to use it. It was relatively quick to set up. Here are the high points and low points of the kit:

    - The agar really is kind of hard to melt. It took about 4 full minutes on 50% power to get it melted sufficiently. It gets a bit foamy if you shake it too hard, which leads to bubbles in your petri dishes. Just be sure to let it sit for a few moments before pouring it. It's also very HOT when it comes out, so be prepared for that.

    - After you inoculate your petri dishes with sample swabs, definitely put them into zip bags and close them up. Use two bags if possible, because the SMELL of the bacterial colonies is really bad after they start growing. Some of my cultures began growing within 24 hours, and the closet where I had stored the bags smelled like an outdoor garbage can in the middle of summer. It was gag-inducing!

Just a little tip: If you really want to see some major bacterial cultures, try these places: kitchen sponges or wash cloths; inside the jets in your whirlpool tub; inside your washing machine; shower floors; remote controls; keyboards; computer mouses.

I purchased this for my 9-year old to use for a school science fair project. It was perfect! The step-by-step instructions were easy for him to follow. His project was very successful and most importantly, he learned a lot!

« The solution blew up my microwave!! »
UGH! This product looked easy enough to use and we needed a lot of petri dishes, so I thought this was the best buy. I put the solution in my microwave for 2 minutes (the directions said 2-5 so I was being cautious). About a minute and a half later we heard a huge explosion and my microwave was dead. My microwave door is now jammed closed from the explosion and it is completely broken! I HIGHLY caution anyone from using this product.
